A FAMILY of four was lucky to escape without injuries after a crash on the Hume Freeway on Monday afternoon.

The family, including two children aged two and four, was travelling south past Chiltern around 4pm on Monday when they pulled their four wheel drive and caravan over to the side of the freeway.

Acting Sergeant Owen Clarke of Wodonga Highway Patrol said a 19-year-old Wangaratta man was travelling in the same direction in a dual cab ute when he veered off the side of the road and crashed into the caravan.

Act Sgt Clarke said the 19-year-old was towing a trailer at the time and police were continuing their investigations.

“We’re still looking into why the vehicle veered off the road and were looking into why the other car was pulled over,” he said.
