STRONG EFFORT: , Kosta Hivaliotishelped Wangaratta’s B3 side chalk up another victory, defeating Corowa Civic at home on Saturday.

WANGARATTA travelled to Yarrawonga/Mulwala Golf Club Resort (YMGCR) in round five of Ovens and Murray Pennant looking to build on the previous two weeks of solid form.

Ian Brimblecombe’s rink of Gary Brimblecombe (third), Terry Johnson (second) and Otto Cardamone (lead) opened up a big 11-0 lead over Gary Sanders after just five ends and continued on to hold a healthy eight-shot buffer at the tea break.

Maurie Braden’s rink had recovered from a poor start to claw back to level with Les Spencer at the break, while Trevor Selwood and Greg McDonald were both within three shots as Wangaratta held a slender two-shot lead overall after 55 ends of play.

In windy conditions YMGCR came out after the break and started to pour on the pressure and Wangaratta began to wilt.

Spencer pulled away from Braden in the second half and Sanders was making a charge at Brimblecombe, while Selwood and McDonald failed to make any inroads.

Brimblecombe ended with a draw against Sanders (24-24), but that was the only point to be gained by Wangaratta as Braden fell by 10 (16-26), McDonald by six (19-25) and Selwood by two (20-22).
