Turning up heat on fire danger preparations

"This season is going to come across in a real rush so don’t leave to next week or the week after what you can do now. - CFA district 23 operations manager Stewart Kreltszheim

FIREFIGHTERS are urging residents to prepare now for what could be an extreme fire danger period this year.

CFA District 23 operations manager Stewart Kreltszheim said the fire danger period was to be declared on December 12, and local firefighters had already completed several stages of preparation.

“That (declaration period) will be effective in the Rural City of Wangaratta, Mansfield and Benalla districts and it means that there will be restrictions for the use of fire,” he said.

The wet spring weather followed by a spell of dry heat has provided prolific grass growth that is now drying out, providing ideal conditions for fires to quickly rip through areas.

“Certainly the grass levels are huge and are providing a huge fuel load,” Mr Kreltszheim said.

“There’s more warm weather and some more rain to come as well so that is only going to enhance the conditions.
