THE proposed $10million development of St Catherine’s Hostel announced last year is in limbo as the hostel has been unable to obtain access to the rear of its property.

According to the hostel’s chief executive officer Adrian Johnstone, 12 months ago the hostel approached the council to use Art Gallery Lane from Ovens Street, but this was rejected.

“We then approached the Catholic Diocese at Bendigo to use part of the land between the old convent and St Patrick’s Church, but they also refused.

“We then went back to the council and made a detailed submission for their reconsideration.

“In that submission the hostel has offered to share some of its 31 car parks with the council similar to the Big W car park arrangement in Ford Street.

Mr Johnstone said that in evenings many of the car parks would be unused and could be made available to art centre patrons.

“We see it as a win win situation for the community,” he said.
