MAINTENANCE of local sports ovals will be on the agenda at this month’s meeting of the Rural City of Wangaratta sport and recreation advisory committee.

The issue remains current, with continued rainfall over the weekend having forced the closure of all the city’s sports grounds during this week to training, school and other activities.

Marcus Forster, Rural City of Wangaratta manager community and recreation, said the issue of ground usage and oval condition had been raised at the advisory committee’s last meeting in June.

“On the agenda for August is a presentation by council’s horticulture coordinator, Tom Fahy, on the oval maintenance regime – what’s usually done and what we could aim for on the horizon,” Mr Forster said.

“There are a number of things users and council can do to help the grounds hold up, and I would expect the discussion at the advisory committee meeting to be around that side of things.

“Of course, we need to continue to be mindful of the fact that we have experienced an extremely wet winter; had we had a dry winter, it could be a different story.”
