CATHY McGowan – Indi’s re-elected Independent parliamentarian – has extended her winning lead over Liberal rival Sophie Mirabella as 2016 federal election vote-counting continues.
The Australian Electoral Commission is yet to declare the official result for the House of Representatives’ seat, with 2306 declaration votes still to be processed and counted in Wangaratta yesterday afternoon.
But the progressive total continues to favour Ms McGowan – with the two-candidate preferred count putting her 8507 votes ahead of Mrs Mirabella.
Just after midday the AEC website showed Ms McGowan with 48,890 votes against Mrs Mirabella’s 40,383.
The Independent ‘Team Orange’ campaign expects the incumbent might finish with a two candidate-preferred margin of about 9000 votes over the Liberal Party’s total.
Ms McGowan’s margin over Mrs Mirabella yesterday stood at 4.51 per cent.
