FORMER Wangaratta Rovers gun Alex Marklew has given his chances of VFL selection a dramatic boost after an incredible 10-goal haul for Doutta Stars in the Essendon and District Football League on the weekend.
Marklew was a clear best on ground for the Stars in Saturday’s 169-point thumping of Airport West, drawing heavy praise from his former captain at Rovers and current teammate at Doutta, Tyson Hartwig.
“Alex really had his eye in,” Hartwig said.
“Coming into the game his form had been good, but given he only joined us on the eve of the season due to being with Essendon’s VFL side, he has just been finding his feet.
“He got great delivery on the weekend, and if he’d kicked five goals we would have been rapt.
“But he just took his opportunities and ended up with 10.1 – it was a pretty awesome performance.”
