AN elderly male driver died at the scene of a crash on the Hume Freeway this evening.
Sergeant Steve Beavis of Wangaratta police said an elderly couple were travelling north along the Hume Freeway at around 2.30pm today when their four-wheel-drive and caravan drifted across the road, landing in the median strip just north of the Greta Road on-ramp.
He said all emergency services crews attended the scene and were working to free to occupants from the vehicle late this afternoon but the male driver died between 4.30pm and 5.30pm.
“It appears the driver has drifted off the road and the car has rolled onto its side,” Sgt Beavis said.
The female passenger suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries.
Both lanes of the Hume Freeway were closed around the scene of the accident, with traffic being diverted through Wangaratta.
