THOUSANDS of dollars worth of damage has been caused to horse stables and other items at the Wangaratta Showgrounds in what police yesterday termed a “senseless act of arson”.

Senior Constable Imogene Gillespie of Wangaratta police said it is believed two large wheelie bins were placed inside the old wooden, tin roofed stables and set alight early yesterday morning.

“A passerby noticed the fire around 6am Thursday…we think it’s happened around midnight, with the fire slowly spreading into the stables’ wooden beams, destroying part of the structure (pictured),” she said.

“Part of the area destroyed was also used by the agricultural society as a storage area and items have been lost.”

Sen Const Gillespie said another 14 wheelie bins, owned by the Rural City of Wangaratta, were also set alight and destroyed.

“Thousands of dollars in damage has been caused by this deliberate act of arson,” she said.
