• Beer brewer loves his job

    WHEN it comes to beer drinkers, the one thing they all agree on is that they know what they like and know what they don’t.

    For the last 16 years, Greg Fanning has been honing his skills and refining his own recipes in what might just be the smallest brewery in the Southern Hemisphere.

    He whips up batches of just 180 litres a time, as need dictates, but just which of his five signature brews is the most popular depends on the day and on the punter.

    “I like dark beers personally, but I’ll try anything,” he said.

    “People who don’t like beer seem to like the ginger beer, because it’s not strong in hops or anything like that.”

    In the last few years that Greg and Leanne Fanning have run the Buffalo Brewery at the Boorhaman Hotel, Greg said he’s noticed a growing interest in hand crafted beers, with people more willing to bend the elbow with something different in their clutches.

    Boorhaman Hotel’s Buffalo Brewery is one of more than a dozen producers showcasing their range at this year’s Ales on the Ovens Craft Beer Festival in Apex Park tomorrow.

    Also on the menu will be gourmet food, back to back live entertainment and a range of activities for kids. Tickets will be available at the gate or visit www.alesontheovens.com.au
