HUNDREDS of talented tennis players will descend on Wangaratta this weekend for the annual Australia Day weekend tournament.
This year will be the 90th time Wangaratta Lawn Tennis Club has hosted the event, with 285 participants signed up to compete.
Club stalwart Frank Harris said the tournament had a rich heritage, considering that many Davis Cup players have participated over the years.
“The likes of Frank Sedgeman and Rex Hartwig were both champions of the tournament,” he said.
“Sam Groth, who is currently playing in the Australian Open and has the fastest serve on record, is a previous winner of the boys’ 16 singles event.”
The men’s open singles event will be hotly contested with last year’s winner, Chris Beaton, returning to defend his title.
Chris Lamb, a four-time champion who was defeated by Beaton in last year’s final, will be looking to take back his crown.
