WANGARATTA and district residents today face the prospect of their hottest day in more than two years.
The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting 42 degrees, with the chance the mercury will surpass the 42.2 degree day on December 20 last month which was our hottest in more than two summers.
Today’s heat follows a string of high temperatures including a top of 38 yesterday, 39.3 on Monday and 36.7 on Sunday.
Authorities have acted on today’s expected extreme peak, declaring it a day of Total Fire Ban in the North East, as well as the Mallee, Wimmera, Northern Country, Central, North Central, South West, and West and South Gippsland.
The CFA has urged caution, particularly on rural properties.
The Department of Health and Human Services has also issued a Heat Health Alert for the North East District ahead of today’s ‘extreme conditions’.
