WANGARATTA police say the two occupants of a removalist truck which rolled off the Hume Freeway near Wangaratta on Saturday are lucky to be alive.

The cabin in which the driver and his passenger were in was crushed on impact with the side embankment as the truck rolled alongside the northbound lane around 7am.

“This could easily have been a double fatality…they’re very lucky men,” Senior Constable Rohan Clapham of Wangaratta Highway Patrol told the Wangaratta Chronicle at the crash site.

“Both men were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

“They’re just lucky the ground was soft, and on an incline, slowing the rolling truck down, short of the treeline.”

Sen Const Clapham said the crash was “a wake up call for all motorists” about fatigue.
