SHARP bowling from Ovens Valley United has an unlikely victory over Beechworth in sight.
The addition of Michael Newton and Vitaly Leschen and the return of Nelum Kumara to the bowling ranks has seen the Tigers bowl the Wanderers out for 100 runs despite a fourth consecutive half century from their skipper Brenton Surrey.
All four bowlers used by the Tigers had an impact, with Leschen recording four wickets and the ever-reliable Kumara picking up 3/10 from 10 miserly overs.
Newton finished with impressive figures of 1/13 off 12 overs, with six maidens and a caught and bowled in his first A grade game since October 2008.
Ovens Valley captain Corey Southern said the bowling attack was on song from the start.
“The pitch was a bit green, and if I won the toss I was going to bowl,” he said.
“Newton and Kumara bowled tight lines right from the start, with Kumara taking three wickets in his first spell.
“Tight lines are something we have lacked in previous rounds, and with Kumara available and bringing in Newton and Leschen, those three blokes took eight wickets between them.”
