SAVE Yarrunga Pool (SYP) Group has called on the administrators of the Rural City of Wangaratta to abandon the current Aquatic Strategy, in the wake of last week’s knockback of $4 million in federal funding.
Council needs the funding to help bankroll construction of a new 50m outdoor pool next to the existing Wangaratta Indoor Sports and Aquatic Centre, which is a key compnent of the $14.6m aquatic strategy.
Rural city chief executive officer Brendan McGrath told the Wangaratta Chronicle last week council was committed to pursuing the aquatics strategy.
He said council would re-apply for the grant in round three of the National Stronger Regions Funding (NSRF) early next year.
But SYP group spokesperson Jenny Hart said the council administrators should listen to feedback from residents and take the opportunity to re-think their strategy.
“The argument put forth by council that ‘old pools don’t get funded’ has proven to be unfounded and untrue,” Ms Hart told the Wangaratta Chronicle.
