Events in jeopardy?

No racing until the track fixed

TWO of Wangaratta’s biggest sporting events on the summer carnival are potentially in jeopardy.

Cycling Victoria last week formally advised the Wangaratta Cycling Club that it has safety concerns over the state of the cycling track at Wangaratta Showgrounds.

It said the offending cracks throughout the track must be repaired before it will sanction any racing.

The unexpected decision from state cycling’s governing body comes only weeks out from the city’s two biggest track cycling events of the year – the club’s scheduled sports event on December 30, and the Wangaratta Sports Carnival on January 23.

Cycling club, showgrounds committee and carnival organisers met on Friday with representatives of the Rural City of Wangaratta council, which is ultimately responsible for the showgrounds and the track facility.
