FORMER Wangaratta local Ryan Breese has boxed his way to multiple Victorian titles and now a world ranking.

Breese moved to Melbourne as he started secondary school back in 2002 but still maintains strong links to Wangaratta with his grandmother living at St Johns Village.

He travels up regularly on the weekends to see her and catch up with his friends who live in Wangaratta.

The 28-year old Breese trains out of Shadows Gym in Eltham with his father, Rick, his trainer and the owner of the gym.

Rick Breese has drawn on his own experiences training Ryan, with Breese the elder a two-time Golden Gloves champion who has been operating his gym, Shadows Boxing, for the last nine years training both amateur and professional boxers.

“Ryan had a promising junior football career, he played TAC Cup footy at Eastern Ranges,” Rick Breese said.

“He was asked to attend preseason training with Hawthorn and played a year at Box Hill but unfortunately he had to stop due to his bad knees.

“Ryan decided to come to Shadows gym to keep fit since he couldn’t train or play footy.

“He started off on the weights and after a while he asked if I could work him out.

“He had a lot of natural talent and very good footwork, I asked if he would like a couple of amateur bouts.

“He said lets do it.

“That is where it all started, I never pushed Ryan to boxing but I am glad he did.

“He is now a four time Victorian champion, and has a world ranking.”
