WANGARATTA City star Adam Burchell confirmed his standing as Albury Wodonga Football Association’s premier player on Wednesday night when he took out both the Star Player and Golden Boot awards.
Burchell went into the presentation night knowing he had the Golden Boot in the bag, having recorded 28 regular season goals, but said the Star Player trophy was a welcome surprise.
“When the results were released mid-season saying that I was leading the goals tally with 19 ahead of Pieter Noordewier on 16 I started to keep an eye on it,” Burchell said.
“I knew he was my only real competition so each week I’d look at how many he had kicked and I knew I finished two ahead of him.
“I was rapt to win that but I was completely over the moon to get the Star Player award.
“I’d read that Andrew Grove had finished runner up twice in a row and I thought surely he would be the one to win it this year.
“The adrenaline was pumping when my name was read out – it was a huge honour.”
