WARNING: Signs in place.

COUNCIL is yet to be given the go ahead to clean up asbestos found at Wangaratta’s Merriwa Park.

Fragments of asbestos were found on the sloping embankment between the park and the rear of Ely Street back in April and the section has been closed ever since.

The Rural City of Wangaratta hired contractors to prepare a report detailing actions needed to clean up the site.

But the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) is yet to signal its approval.

“As soon has we are able to carry out the works, we’ll press the go button,” council director – infrastructure services Alan Clark said.

“There are no timeframes yet but once we start the works to remove the asbestos fragments it will be a reasonably lengthy process.”

The affected area has not been commonly used by park goers in the past and council reports that zero danger exists for people attending Merriwa Park.
