WANGARATTA High School (WHS) cross country skiers earned podium finishes and top honours at last weekend’s Victorian Junior Cross Country Ski Championships, staged at Falls Creek.
Under blue skies and perfect snow conditions, the WHS skiers displayed the depth of talent and experience that has seen the team dominate the podium at state and national Interschools Championships.
The Vic Junior Championships was the first competition of the ski season, and for some of the skiers only the second time on snow, due to the lack of snow this winter.
However, Mother Nature certainly made up for the slow start to the season, bringing fresh snow in the lead up to the races, and fast, hard tracks laid down by the expert groomers at Falls Creek helped deliver some super times from the young skiers.
For the younger skiers such as Liam Flanagan and Jack Findlay, the championships were a great opportunity to test their speed and skills under race conditions against Victoria’s best.
The past eight weeks of dry land training on roller skis proved to be very valuable with the boys putting in some strong performances to finish well inside the top 10 in both disciplines – classic sprint and skate distance.
Both boys started skiing at a young age with their families during regular visits to Falls Creek and Mt Buffalo.
