The $12 million in Federal Government funding for Indi was not allocated because the area is now a marginal seat, Cathy McGowan (MHR, Indi) believes.
Wangaratta was not included in Tuesday’s Stronger Regions Fund announcement, which did include $10 million for the Wodonga City Heart Revitalisation Plan, $1.87 million towards the Alpine Events Centre in Bright, and $200,000 to support the Wahgunyah Recreation Reserve upgrade – all projects strongly pushed by their local councils.
Ms McGowan told the Wangaratta Chronicle the idea of funding marginal seat before the next election did not come up in her recent conversation with Regional Development Minister, Warren Truss.
“I got no sense at all that he was thinking that,” she said.
“I’d like to think the three local governments did the work and presented their projects well.”
She congratulated Mr Truss and Treasurer Joe Hockey on the Federal Budget, especially the jobs and small business and families packages, and the inclusion of a Regional Impact Statement that was missing last year.
“It’s a real stride forward for the government, they’ve changed their tune,” she said.
“I think (regional issues) still needs a lot more analysis.”
