NEW Wangaratta High School skiing coach Nick Grimmer wants to see more swimmers joining the sport.

The former Australian team coach joined the highly successful high school team this year and said swimming and cross country skiing were similar in terms of physical exertion.

“I used to be a skier and a teacher with the national team so I’ve had the opportunity to coach some people who’ve made the ski team previously,” Grimmer said.

“Skiing and swimming cross over really well – you use your arms, legs, cardiovascular system for both so it’s an advantage for skiers to swim and swimmers to ski.

“Being Australia, there are pools everywhere so it’s pretty easy to get people into swimming.

“We have one new girl, Claire (Hernon), who’s a swimmer that’s joined us and we’d love to see people from other sports coming to do skiing.”
