SENATOR Bridget McKenzie could still run for the seat of Indi, even though she is The Nationals’ Senate candidate for the next federal election.
The Nationals closed off nominations for the Senate last Friday, with Ms McKenzie confirmed as the number one candidate for The Nationals.
Speculation has been strong Ms McKenzie would run for Indi, with the Senator making several visits to the municipality over the past year.
She said holding the Senate candidacy wouldn’t preclude her from seeking pre-selection for the lower house seat of Indi at the next election.
When asked if she could theoretically still run for Indi, Ms McKenzie said “theoretically, absolutely”.
She did, however, point out that The Nationals have not begun the pre-selection process for Indi.
“The fact is The Nationals will be running a candidate which under the Coalition agreement we are entitled to do,” Ms McKenzie said.
“We hold two of the three state seats in the electorate.”
