Sports tourism still city’s goal

Several events planned for this year

SPORTS tourism is still kicking goals for the Rural City of Wangaratta, according to council’s manager economic development and tourism Gary Warrener.

“The budget for sports tourism is very small, but we have had some great events recently, particularly the Wangaratta Fun Run and Marathon,” Mr Warrener said.

“In January we had the junior Tennis Victoria ranking tournament.

“And we have the under 18 baseball championships coming up in late June, and in August the Sam Miranda Tour of the King Valley.

“We are working to assist in getting up a street criterium in conjunction with that, and Channel Nine has picked up the tour and is going to televise parts of it; last year there were clips broadcast on SBS.”

Mr Warrener said Sports Marketing Australia, which works with council on tourism, regularly received enquiries about the rural city’s potential as a sporting event host.

“They talk to a lot of groups and send us details of the sporting events which are out there,” he said.
