IT was his first time racing as a senior cyclist at the Wangaratta Sports Carnival and Thomas McDonald made it a memorable occasion by winning the 2000 metres wheelrace final on Saturday night.
In humid conditions at the Wangaratta Showgrounds, McDonald sprinted past a strong contingent of seasoned cyclists to take out the $1250 first place prize.
Starting the race with a 110m handicap, he got off to a steady start before powering home to snare victory from last year’s winner, Ben Abels from Warrandyte.
McDonald said he was “smashed” after finishing the race.
“That was one of the hardest races I’ve ever been in, but when you win at the end you just get that rush of adrenaline,” he said at the finish line on Saturday night.
“It doesn’t hurt that much now but I’m sure that in five minutes I’ll be on the ground.
