WANGARATTA City’s push towards the Albury Wodonga Football Association finals came to an unceremonious end at the weekend, with the Red Devils thumped 8-0 by a reinvigorated Wodonga Diamonds.
In a game they needed to win in order to keep their finals hopes alive, the Devils were listless and had no answer for the attacking play of the Diamonds, which reaped an immediate reward when Jarred Herzina opened the scoring just two minutes in before going on to register a hat trick.
Wangaratta City co-coach Mario Antonello said the onslaught was so severe that it was hard to identify just where and when things had gone awry.
“It was just a disaster all around,” he said.
“There wasn’t one area that let us down – we were just beaten all over the park.
“They had us on the back foot early, but at halftime when they were 3-0 up all three of their goals had gone from our defensive lapses.”
