WANGARATTA City has its sights set firmly on a spot in the Albury Wodonga Football Association top eight following a convincing 3-1 win over seventh-placed Albury Hotspurs on Sunday.
The Red Devils opened the scoring in the 19th minute through Jon Shaw, but despite dominating play their lead was eradicated midway through the second half when scores were tied at 1-1.
The stalemate didn’t last long, however, as Shaw again found the net three minutes later, while Aaron Taylor put the finishing touches on the win with a goal of his own 83 minutes in.
Wangaratta City co-coach Mario Antonello said he never doubted the Devils would win, even after scores were tied with 20 minutes remaining.
“We’d done a heap of attacking up to that point but just hadn’t capitalised on our chances,” Antonello said.
“But when you are getting that many opportunities you’re going to get one or two in eventually.
“We really need to win to keep our season alive, and I knew the boys would get the job done.”
