WANGARATTA City FC claimed a major scalp on Sunday, beating Myrtleford FC 4-2 in the inaugural Darrel Van der Steeg Shield match.
The Devils came back from a 2-1 shortfall at halftime to score three goals in the second half.
Veteran Mark Waddington was awarded the Darrel Van der Steeg medal for best on ground, bagging one goal for the match, while Mike Ritter claimed a goal in each half.
Co-coach Mario Antonello sat out the game with captain Elliot Jones due to yellow card suspensions and said Hamish Buck stepped up ably to the captaincy role.
“Because Elliot and I were suspended, we gave the captain’s armband to Hamish and he did everything you’d expect of a captain,” Antonello said.
“He was really loud, his directions were good and he cheered on his teammates.
“And with both of us sitting out, it made the win even better.”
