‘Lot of heart’ in shield play

HONOR will be at the forefront of Wangaratta City FC’s clash with Myrtleford Savoys on Sunday, as the two clubs face off for the Darrel Van der Steeg Shield.

Van der Steeg played for both clubs throughout his local soccer career before his tragic death at age 24 in October last year.

The two teams honored their former teammate at the La Fiera Cup in Myrtleford earlier this year and are keen to put on a similar game tomorrow.

“It’s an emotional game,” Wangaratta City’s Hamish Busk said.

“Last time we played Myrtleford it was an emotional game because it was the first time we’d played them since Darrel passed away – there’s a lot of heart in it.”

The two teams also have a fierce rivalry dating back several decades.
