WANGARATTA has already experienced an economic boost from this weekend’s rounds of the 2014 V8 Supercars Championship at Winton Motor Raceway.
An influx of visitors began arriving earlier this week for the event which regularly attracts crowds of more than 60,000 race fans for the three days of action from April 4 to 6.
Wendy Lester from the Quality Hotel Gateway Wangaratta said guests began arriving on Monday with the motel booked out from Wednesday due to the V8 races.
“This would be the second biggest event of the year for us as far as bookings go, just behind the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz,” Ms Lester said.
“People are arriving earlier and most don’t leave until Sunday or Monday.
“It’s definitely getting bigger each year for us.”
Winton Motor Raceway executive officer, Adam Ronke, said the value of the V8 Supercars meeting to the local region was around $30 million based on a financial impact report made some 10 years ago and he hoped this weekend’s crowd numbers would reach 65,000 for the three days.
“We had 61,000 attend last year in August which had a very wet build-up,” Mr Ronke said.
