BANGERANG elders have expressed their joy at receiving $5000 from the State Government to put together an application to for Dual Registered Aboriginal Party (RAP) status over lands in the North East.
The funding was announced last Thursday by minister for Aboriginal Affairs, Jeanette Powell in Benalla.
Bangerang elder Uncle Sandy (John) Atkinson said it was a special day.
“The Bangerang Nation at the time of European settlement through various clans and family groups extended from Echuca east along the Murray to Howlong; south to Chiltern, Wangaratta, Benalla and west to Shepparton, Tatura, Kyabram and Tongala and the lands between,” he said.
“Bangerang lands which extend into southern New South Wales as far as Jerilderie are not subject to this application.”
