RISING local golfer Nathan Kungl overcame a mid-week illness and a final round charge from a former champion to take out the Jubilee Golf Club Championship for the first time on Saturday.
A junior star at the club, Kungl went into the final round with a five-shot lead over Andrew Shearer and closed with a round of 79 to defeat Michael Baillie Jnr by four shots.
Having played alongside the likes of Shearer, Baillie Jnr and Greg Rigoni for a number of years now, Kungl said he was delighted to capture his maiden title.
“It’s a pretty special feeling,” he said.
“I’ve seen a lot of players over the years win it.
“I think Michael Baillie has won it 10 times so it feels pretty good to get my name on the honor board with those names.”
In a dominant performance, Kungl led after the first round, had a tie of the lead at the half way mark before fending off every challenge over the final 36 holes.
