Smith gets tennis gig

Grasscourt club appoints respected junior mentor as its new head coach

SMITH TAKES CONTROL: YOUNG tennis players (from left) Daniel Smith, Thomas Johnstone, Rebecca Johnstone and Samuel Berenger are looking forward to the upcoming season along with (from right) trainee coaches Josh Vlcek and Jordan Friend as well as new Wangaratta Lawn Tennis Club coach Doug Smith.

WANGARATTA Lawn Tennis Club has received a massive boost just months ahead of the upcoming season with respected local identity Doug Smith announced as its new coach.

Following former coach Ben Scott’s decision to move to Darwin to further his career, the lawn club was in the market for a new coach and only recently agreed to terms with Smith.

Smith, 48, himself an accomplished player having finished runner-up in last year’s WLTC championships, is the coach and director of All Stars Tennis and is passionate about developing players from a very young age.

Having previously been involved with other local clubs, Smith said he couldn’t wait to get started at the Wangaratta lawn.

“Absolutely,” he said.

“It’s a new adventure and I think it’s a great opportunity for young kids of Wangaratta.

“The whole concept of why I wanted to do it was to get more opportunity to help develop tennis in the region.”
