THE Victorian Short Course Swimming Championships hit Wangaratta this weekend, and with the event comes the opportunity for local swimmers to grab their chance to shine on the big stage.

It is the fourth time in six years that Wangaratta Indoor Sports and Aquatic Centre has hosted the event, and Wangaratta Swimming Club (WSC) head coach Mark Synnot said it was creating plenty of excitement.

“It’s something we as a club have done pretty well in over the last few years, so we’re definitely looking forward to it,” Mark said.

“It’s a huge event, with around 500 competitors, plus all their coaches and family members, so it brings a lot of people into town.

“It’s certainly an advantage for our swimmers to compete here.

“They are comfortable with the environment, they know where everything is, and they get to go home, sleep in their own beds and eat the regular food their parents serve up for them.”
