But Antonello says Devils must be cautious of reigning champs

WANGARATTA co-coach Mario Antonello is shocked that perennial Albury/Wodonga Football Association powerhouse Albury United has slipped to eighth on the ladder this year.

The Greens, the most successful club in the last decade, have won just six matches this season and remain under pressure to hold off Albury Hotspurs for the final spot in the finals.

After winning the grand final last season, Albury United’s form has been inconsistent and Antonello was shocked to see them struggling.

“I am surprised,” he said.

“We played them first and they beat us 5-4 when we had probably 4-5 out but they still looked pretty good.

“They still had the nucleus of the side that won the Cup last year.

“I think they’ve lost a couple to injury but obviously the guys that have come in haven’t done as good a job as those in the past.

“Still, you wouldn’t want to play them come finals time – they won it from sixth or seventh last year.”
