$300,000 probe into city levees

Integrity of the system must be checked

SOME $300,000 will be spent on Wangaratta’s levee system.

The Rural City of Wangaratta has teamed up with the Department of Environment and Primary Industry (DEPI) for the project, which will assess both the Parfitt Road and Wilson Road levee banks.

The DEPI is contributing the majority of the funding ($200k) while council has allocated $100k towards the project in its draft 2013/14 budget.

Council’s acting director – infrastructure services, Peter Godfrey, said there were several elements to the project.

“The first phase involves assessment of the Parfitt Road and Wilson Road levees to identify where more targeted geotechnical investigations might be undertaken,” he said.

“That will involve looking at background information and inspecting levees, then developing a report that would develop recommendations for any works identified in any substandard parts of the levees.
