THE number’s up for St Patrick’s bingo.

A Wangaratta institution, which has been run at St Patrick’s Hall on Thursday nights for almost 36 years, bingo was conducted for the final time last night.

Barb Mahoney, one of the organisers, said dwindling numbers at the weekly event meant it was simply no longer viable.

Numbers fell to just 35 at last week’s session – a far cry from bingo crowds at their peak in the early 1980s, which regularly filled the hall.

“We have been getting anything up to 45, but there are just not enough people, and the money varies,” Mrs Mahoney said.

She said winding down bingo, which has financially supported Wangaratta’s Catholic schools and facilities since its inception, had been on the cards for some time.
