WANGARATTA Rovers posted their best win of the Ovens and Murray Netball League season on the weekend, upsetting second-placed Lavington by four goals in a thrilling contest at the WJ Findlay Oval courts.
The Hawks, celebrating star defender Alana Sutton’s 100th appearance for the club, were on the back foot early, with the Panthers, sparked by the two Sarahs – Meredith and Senini – taking a four-goal lead into the first change.
The home side tightened up defensively in the second period, but only got one goal closer, before starting to take control of the contest with an 11-7 third quarter surge.
Sutton completely shut down Senini in the second half, Stacey Emms fired in the mid-court and Jess Clarke was terrific in the attacking circle, finishing with 26 goals as the Hawks finished off their opponents with a 10-7 final stanza, handing the Panthers just their second loss for the season.
Coach Michelle Caruso said it had been a must-win match for the Hawks after coming off back-to-back losses, the second of which came against a side they have traditionally beaten well in Corowa-Rutherglen.
In B grade netball the Hawks had a good win over the Panthers, getting up 44-35 with Carly Van Den Heuvel, Lauren Conroy and Mikaela Cose (31 goals) leading the way.
