Arrests after high-speed chase

TWO men will face charges in both Victoria and New South Wales following a police pursuit yesterday that allegedly reached speeds over 150 kilometres per hour.

Sergeant Peter McGuffy, of Wangaratta police, said a Toyota Corolla that was allegedly stolen from Sunshine was first spotted on the Hume Freeway at Benalla at 6.45am.

“It was initially reported as a suspicious vehicle in Benalla,” he said.

Three police cars gave chase as the vehicle headed north, but had to abandon the pursuit just outside Wangaratta because the car reached high speeds in wet conditions.

Police did not have time to deploy stop sticks ahead of the car.

Sgt McGuffy said NSW police resumed the chase near Gundagai later in the morning and a police car crashed during the pursuit.

The two men will be dealt with for the NSW offences first before being brought back to Victoria.
