DETECTIVES from the Wangaratta Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team are currently investigating a number of sexting cases involving teenagers in Wangaratta and Moira Shire.
Detective Senior Constable Romina McEwan said there were serious consequences for those involved in sending explicit images and encouraged the public to report all sexting incidents to police after the recent spate of cases.
“Many young people are sending photographs that constitute child pornography but are unaware or oblivious to the types of offences they are committing,” she said.
“We see young couples sending naked photographs of themselves to each other by using their mobile phone or online and these images are then sometimes forwarded to other people.
“Those children who seemingly, willingly text their naked image or sexual references often do not consider the longer term consequences of the image or information being in a space outside their control.”
More on this story will be in Monday’s Wangaratta Chronicle.
