Hawk’s instant impact

Marklew kicks four on debut as Rovers return to winners list with big win

FUTURE STAR: Alex Marklew made a memorable debut for the Hawks on Saturday, kicking four goals against Corowa/Rutherglen.

A SPECTACULAR debut performance youngster Alex Marklew led the Wangaratta Rovers to a huge 90-point victory over Corowa/Rutherglen on Saturday in what was close to the side’s best performance of the season.

Marklew, son of club legend Rick, was brought into the side after superb form in the thirds and didn’t disappoint, racking up plenty of touches and finishing the game with four goals.

Hawks coach Mick Caruso was full of praise for the youngster, saying the budding forward made an instant impact.

“Alex was terrific,” Caruso said.

“I’d say he would have had 30 touches, taken at least 10 marks and kicked four goals so he had a real impact for us.

“We started him on the ground and he was great – he is just a good instinctive player.

“Him and Cody Schutt have really been good at senior level for us.”
