THE end of June will mark the end of an era in Wangaratta, as milkman Graeme Hochfeld makes his last home delivery round.

‘Hocky’, 67, will scale back his deliveries from July 1 to focus on small businesses.

And with him will go the last bastion of an age when regular home deliveries from the dairy, baker, butcher and grocer were the norm.

Currently the only milky operating in the city, Hocky has become a fixture around Wangaratta’s streets over a quarter of a century – and something of a guardian of his adopted home town in the dark, early hours of the morning.

Originally from Dimboola, Hocky lived in Stawell, then Melbourne, but was not a fan of the big smoke.

“My father worked on the state rivers, and he liked Wang when he came through here, so they came here to live, and I came for a few weeks and stayed,” he said.
