Hawks far too strong, skilful for Raiders

EFFORT: Xanthea Dewez

WANGARATTA Rovers did what they had to do on Saturday, defeating Wodonga Raiders by 30 goals at Birallee Park to continue its quest for a top three finish in Ovens and Murray netball.

In what was always expected to be a one-sided affair, the Hawks easily accounted for their bottom-placed opponent, winning every quarter in the 56-26 result.

Experienced stars Jessica Clarke and Kristy Newton ensured the Raiders wouldn’t even get a sniff of victory with a breath-taking first quarter performance.

The Hawks were simply onto every loose ball and rarely gave the Raiders space and time to work on their attacking plans.

By quarter time the margin was six goals and that increased to 16 at half time after a 16-6 second quarter.

Given the margin at half time, Hawks coach Michelle Caruso was able to rotate her shooters with Clarke combining with Caitlyn and Mikaela Cose on different occasions.

Clarke finished with 29 goals, Caitlyn Cose added 17 while Mikaela shot 10 in an impressive performance.
