FIRE destroyed an elderly Everton couple’s weatherboard home, and all their possessions, within minutes on Saturday morning.

Acting Senior Sergeant Colin Anderson of Wangaratta police said firefighters were at the scene within seven minutes of the call at 8.47am, but the home was completely engulfed and couldn’t be saved.

“There is nothing suspicious about the fire, which totally destroyed the home (on Great Alpine Road),” Act Sen Sgt Anderson said.

“The man suffered some smoke inhalation and both he and his wife were taken by ambulance to hospital, just for general observation.”

CFA District 23 operations manager, Stewart Kreltszheim, said fire investigators will be at the site today to help determine the exact cause of the blaze.

Early indications suggest it may have been an electrical fault.
