AN Indigo Valley farmer, rural consultant and Order of Australia recipient will attempt to unseat Sophie Mirabella (MHR, Indi) at September’s Federal election.
Cathy McGowan has been preselected by Voice 4 Indi, an independent group made up of representatives from across the electorate.
Some 200-250 people attended yesterday’s announcement at the Wangaratta Performing Arts Centre, where Voice 4 Indi’s report was also launched.
The report was compiled with the input of 440 people from across Indi, who took part in “kitchen table conversations” and provided feedback to Voice 4 Indi about what they want from a local representative.
For her part, Ms McGowan said she was “thrilled” and “humbled” to be preselected as the candidate Voice 4 Indi will support.
In terms of whether she could win, Ms McGowan said winning wasn’t the issue.
“I think people will have a very strong choice to make,” she said.
“I think I’m a really strong candidate and I’ve got excellent qualifications.
“People are looking for process and being engaged and I’m going to be a very strong, competitive candidate and give people choice.”
