LOCAL rider Matt Clark has had his strongest performance to date in the National Road Series, finishing fifth overall in the 426.6km Tour of Toowoomba, which ran from May 9-12.
Clark’s preparation for the event was excellent, placing 14th in the Battle on the Border – a 370km, four stage race based around the border of New South Wales and Queensland.
Still, his expectations for success in the Tour of Toowoomba were virtually non-existent due to the quirky feature of a team time trial as the third stage.
“I knew going in that I didn’t have much chance of getting a good result because of that,” Clark said.
“The Tour of Toowoomba always has the team time trial, but it’s a rare thing – only one or two races a year have it.
“Everyone starts together, and the time is taken after the fourth rider on your team crosses the line, so you have to work together as much as possible.
“The team that won it had the first four riders across the line in the individual time trial in the previous race, so we knew we were up against it.
“This was only our second major race as a team, and the time trial isn’t something we’ve worked on a whole lot just yet, so in the end we were pretty happy with the way we went.”
