Can’t sack him

Despite union call to suspend Cr Fidge because of 21 ‘substantiated’ claims of bullying staff

LOCAL Government Minister, Jeanette Powell, won’t suspend Rural City of Wangaratta Councillor Julian Fidge.

Ms Powell has confirmed she doesn’t have the power to suspend Cr Fidge, despite a request by the Australian Services Union (ASU).

As reported in the Wangaratta Chronicle on Friday, the union believes Cr Fidge should be suspended because a private firm has substantiated 21 of 23 claims Cr Fidge bullied council staff.

But Ms Powell has released a statement to the Chronicle confirming she did not have the power to suspend or sack an individual councillor.

“The Local Government Act does not empower the minister to dismiss an individual councillor,” the statement from the minister’s office reads.

“The ASU should take its concerns to the chief executive officer of Wangaratta council.”
