A LOCAL golfer’s dream shot turned into something closer to a nightmare at Sunday’s Brendan Joseph Bisignano Memorial Shield Sporting Clubs Golf Day.
Brendan Essex hit the tee shot of his life on the par three 13th and watched his ball pitch on the green and roll straight for the hole.
With sponsor Your Everyday Gourmet putting up a $10,000 cash prize for a hole in one on the 161m 13th, there was a lot more than just bragging rights riding on the ball’s journey to the cup.
Essex could see the dollar signs flashing before his eyes, but didn’t allow himself to get too invested given his prior form.
“I’ve gone close a couple of times, but I’ve never hit a hole in one before,” Essex said.
“And I hate that hole nine times out of 10 I hit it into the dam, so I wasn’t confident at all when I was teeing off.
“But when I hit it I thought, gee, I’ve hit that well.
“Then when it hit the green and started rolling I started to think, gee, this is a chance to go in.”
