Starry night for our volunteers

A GALAXY of stars awaits decoration for National Volunteer Week, and Jennifer Johnstone (Act, Belong, Commit program coordinator), Kerry Craig (Rural City of Wangaratta community engagement planner), Linda Phillis (Community Skillsbank co-ordinator) and Marg Pullen (Wangaratta Community Pride chairperson) are encouraging local groups to let their creativity flow.

A GALAXY of stars will light up National Volunteer Week in May, but local community groups are needed to give them some creative sparkle.

Seventy 50cm wooden stars have been produced by members of the Wangaratta Men’s Shed, ready for decoration by community groups and any organisations with volunteers, as part of the You’re-A-Star activity.

“This is a chance for people to talk about their groups, and promote their groups and recognise their volunteers,” Kerry Craig, Rural City of Wangaratta community engagement planner, said.

The stars will be displayed at Wangaratta’s Volunteer Appreciation Event on Wednesday, May 15 at The Centre, and can be reclaimed by the groups after the event.

To obtain a star and be included in the ‘starry night’ at The Centre, groups simply need to register with the Rural City of Wangaratta by Friday, April 12.

You’re-A-Star is just part of Wangaratta’s recognition of National Volunteer Week.

The evening on May 15 will run from 5.30pm to 7.30pm at The Centre.

It will include entertainment by Creative Youth, and those attending have the chance to find out what volunteer opportunities exist in the community.
