SOPHIE Mirabella (MHR, Indi) has plenty of things to do without worrying about a defamation claim by a former Rural City of Wangaratta councillor.
While those weren’t the exact words used, the message coming out of Mrs Mirabella’s office was loud and clear this week.
It comes after details of former councillor Doug McPhie’s legal action against Mrs Mirabella was splashed across metropolitan media.
Mr McPhie has launched action through solicitors Nevin Lenne and Gross, concerning a letter Mrs Mirabella sent to new rural city councillor, Paul O’Brien, on his election to council in October last year.
In her letter, which was leaked to the media through a Freedom of Information request, Mrs Mirabella congratulated Mr O’Brien and said “the team effort proved a protection racket can be challenged now to expose it”.
Mr McPhie’s solicitor’s letter was also leaked to the media, and states Mrs Mirabella’s letter contained “highly defamatory material”.
